Exercise Description

The overhead step up exercise builds leg power while working your core and shoulders. It's a full-body move that burns calories and improves balance.

How To

1. Hold dumbbells overhead with arms straight, stand facing a sturdy box or step 2. Step up with your right foot, placing your entire foot on the step surface 3. Drive through your right heel to lift your body up, bringing your left foot to meet the right 4. Step down with control, leading with your left foot for the overhead step up descent 5. Complete all reps on one side before switching, keeping the weights overhead throughout the overhead step up movement

Form Tips

• Keep your core tight and weights directly overhead throughout the entire overhead step up movement • Step up with your whole foot, not just your toes, to get better stability and power • Control the descent - don't just drop down fast, which puts stress on your knees during overhead step up • Keep your chest up and shoulders pulled back to maintain good posture

Common Mistakes

• Leaning forward and losing the overhead position, which kills the core challenge of overhead step up • Using the bottom leg to push off instead of driving through the stepping leg • Choosing a step that's too high, making the overhead step up movement sloppy and unsafe
